WEEE Recycling

old computer cablesWhat is WEEE?

Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) broadly describes unwanted, discarded, surplus, obsolete, or broken electrical or electronic devices. In some circumstances leads and cables such as those that Leads Direct manufacture and sell can be considered WEEE, even though they are simply cables and do not contain any of the hazardous substances assoicated with real electronic waste.

Regulations

The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive (WEEE Directive) came into force in January 2007 and aims to both reduce the amount of electrical and electronic equipment being produced and to encourage everyone to reuse, recycle and recover electrical and electronic equipment. For details of EU Legislation on WEEE please visit the EU WEEE Legislation page.

WEEE Compliance

Leads Direct Ltd is classed as a Large Producer of WEEE under the regulations, and is a member of the Comply Direct producer compliance scheme which ensures that we meet all the necessary regulations.  Our scheme membership number is CD01/01129 and our Environment Agency Registration Reference is WEE/MM4084AA

Recycling Symbol

If the WEEE recycling symbol (displayed left) is found on any of the goods sold by Leads Direct or purchased elsewhere, it means that the product is classed as Electrical or Electronic Equipment and is covered by the WEEE Regulations.

You should take great care in disposing of any such products and MUST NOT under any circumstances dispose of them with your normal waste as they pose a great risk to your community if they are accidentally sent for disposal with landfill.

How do I recycle my old products?

We would recommend that when you are finished with any old electronic product you take it to your local collection facility to be recycled. You will be able to find your nearest collection facility by entering your postcode here.

If you purchased a product from us as an end consumer, you are entitled to return the product or any product that it replaces to us, and we will ensure that it is disposed of responsibly and by recycling wherever possible. It must be EXACTLY the same type of product, so you cannot buy a phono cable and send us back a dozen fridges to get rid of, and of course you may prefer to take you waste to your local tip for recycling and avoid the cost of shipping it back to us which you must meet.

If you are a business cable purchaser you may wish to review your recycling policy. Copper prices are very high at the moment and your unwanted cable could be worth money – check with your local scrap metal dealer before giving away a valuable resource.

Further information

UK households dispose of over 1.2 million tonnes of electrical and electronic waste every year. This is enough to fill the equivalent of 150,000 double decker buses.

Much of the UK’s electronic waste ends up in landfill sites where toxins put communities at risk. Failure to segregate any type of recyclable material in the home will usually result in items being disposed of in a landfill site (buried in the ground in the UK) or being incinerated.
