What is the difference between Male and Female connectors?

The difference between Male and Female connectors is simple. Just like people the Male has a sticking out “pin” which he plugs into something. The Females on the other hand have a “hole” in which to receive something, usually a “pin”!

The apparent exception to this is the DC Jack where the receptacle has a pin and the line connector has a hole… but that is purely based on terminology where people call the connector a plug when in fact it is a line socket.
